Limitations Of The Second Law Of Thermodynamics

There are various limitations and misconceptions about the second law of thermodynamics. Before moving on to that first we need to understand thermodynamics and the second law of thermodynamics.

Thermodynamics is the relationship between heat, temperature, work, and energy. In wider terms, thermodynamics is the study of physics that deals with the transfer of energy from one place to another. This behavior is governed by the four laws of thermodynamics which are:

  • The zeroth law of thermodynamics- The law states that when two systems are in thermal equilibrium with the third system, they’re in equilibrium with each other as well.

  • The first law of thermodynamics- This law states that the change in the system’s internal energy is the difference between the heat added to the surroundings and the work done by it.

  • The third law of thermodynamics- This law states that the entropy of the crystal of an element tends to be zero in its most stable state as the temperature goes to zero. It allows the absolute scale of entropy to establish that determines the randomness of order in the system.

The Second Law Of Thermodynamics

It states that as the energy is transferred, more and more of it is wasted. It also states that in an isolated system the entropy always increases. The universe’s level of disorder is growing. It is one of the four laws of thermodynamics. The system shift from one to another random behavior. According to the second law, the heat waves move from the hotter area to the colder area but not the other way around.

Now if we talk about the Limitations and Misconceptions

  1. The misconception of the second law of thermodynamics is that it is only applicable to the closest system.
  2. It does not give a brief about the entropy
  3. It refers to the behavior of the bigger system, that’s why it can’t be reduced
  4. It is a postulate that restricts many processes which can be done from the experiences and can be possible with the other laws of physics
